Women’s Team
The Women’s Section was founded back in 1957 by Mrs. Hastings, a school teacher at Mentone Girls High School. Originally known as the Mordialloc Women’s Hockey Club, it was based adjacent to the Mordialloc Football Club, until 1974 when it moved to the Walter Galt Reserve in Warren Road, Mordialloc.
Dressed in red and white harlequins, with a bottle green skirt and bottle green socks with a red turn over, the Mordialloc Women’s Hockey club had its fair share of success winning the first Premierships, in 1966 (D Grade) and the second in 1986 (WD3S).
In 1992 the Mordialloc Women’s Hockey Club commenced talks with local men’s hockey club The Old Mentonian’s, about the possibility of a merger. So it was in 1993, the Old Mentonian’s entered their first open women’s teams competing in Melbourne League 3, District 3 South and District 5 South.
In 1997 the club changed its name from the Old Mentonian’s to the Mentone Hockey Club, uniting the newly establish veteran and junior sections with the existing men’s and women’s sections under the one name. With the new name came a new look as the club moved from gold shirts with sky blue and navy trim to the navy blue shirt with gold and sky diagonal stripes and the Mentone Panther on the chest.
A lot may have changed since then; however there are still a few original Mordialloc Women’s Hockey Club members running around today.
