New to hockey?

You don’t need to know anything to start.

Everyone at Mentone started somewhere. Whether you’ve never held a stick or you’re coming back after years away — we’ve got a spot for you.

Common questions

Things people always ask.

Do I need to have played before?

Not at all. We have teams and programs for complete beginners through to Premier League — if you’ve never played, Hook in2 Hockey for kids or a Metro grade for adults is the perfect starting point.

What gear do I need?

To start, just a mouthguard and shinpads. We can lend sticks while you figure out if it’s for you. Once you’re registered, check the uniforms page for playing kit, ordering windows and clash requirements.

How much does it cost?

Like most community sports clubs, we run on volunteers — fees cover umpires, ground hire, equipment and Hockey Victoria levies. Full 2026 fees and how registration works are right here on this page.

When do I need to decide?

Happens sometimes — and that’s completely fine. Come along to a training session first, meet the team and see if it feels right. No obligation to register on the spot.

I’m transferring from another club.

Welcome. Just get in touch with the relevant section coordinator and we’ll guide you through the transfer process with Hockey Victoria. It’s straightforward.

Can I come along before registering?

Yes. Come to training, have a hit, meet people. We’d rather you come down and get a feel for the club before committing. Just let the coordinator know you’re coming.
