Our approach
Fun first. Skills that stick.
Our junior program promotes fun, enjoyment, teamwork and a positive attitude — while helping players develop strong skills and a love of the game.
Training combines technical coaching with a small-game approach, building individual ability, teamwork and game awareness in a positive and supportive environment.
Senior players from both the men’s and women’s sections actively support the junior program — mentoring players and helping make the transition into senior hockey smooth and welcoming.
Introductory programs are how most kids find their way into the club, and we run them regularly — from Hockey Australia’s Hook in2 Hockey through to free come-and-try clinics run by our own volunteers. In 2025 Mentone was named a runner-up for Hockey Australia’s Hook in2 Hockey Club of the Year.

Common questions
What parents usually ask.
What age can my child start hockey?
From age 5. Our free beginner clinics are for kids aged 5–14, U8 and U10 play small-sided mini hockey, and U12 to U18 play full Hockey Victoria competition. No experience is needed at any age.
How much does junior hockey cost?
The beginner clinics are free. 2026 winter season club fees are $40 for Game On! (Under 8), $70 for Under 10 and $410 for U12 to U18, with $50 off for each additional sibling and payment plans available. Hockey Victoria registration is separate. Full fee table.
When and where do juniors train?
At Mentone Grammar’s Keysborough Playing Fields, 756–768 Springvale Road, Braeside. Boys train Tuesdays 5:00–6:00pm (U12 and U14) and 6:00–7:00pm (U16); girls train Thursdays at the same times; mixed U18 trains Tuesdays 6:00–7:00pm.
What does my child need to bring and wear?
For the beginner clinics, nothing: sticks, balls and shin guards are provided, so just wear sports clothes and runners. For team hockey, a mouthguard and shinpads to start; we can lend a stick while they find their feet. Junior team players wear the club playing uniform: the uniforms page covers what to buy, where to order and when clash kit is needed.
How do we sign up?
Book the free clinics through the club’s Majestri page. For team hockey, register online through the club portal, which then takes you through Hockey Victoria registration. Not sure where your child fits? Email juniors@mentonehockey.org.au.
Can we try before we register?
Yes. Come along to a training session first and meet the coaches; just let the junior coordinator know you’re coming. The beginner clinics are also a free, low-pressure way to try hockey.
